House and Senate Budget Negotiations Resume Monday

House and Senate conferees will go back to the table Monday to continue working toward a state budget agreement. One of the remaining points of contention is funding for higher education.

Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer said on Friday that it was difficult to predict what a compromise would look like.

“That’s why we have a conference committee and it would be premature for me to comment at this time as to where that’s gonna go,” said Thayer.

The House budget restored cuts to higher education proposed by Governor Bevin and passed by the republican-led Senate.

Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo said last week that the reductions aren’t needed.

“The question is should we compromise higher education, by allowing funding cuts that aren’t necessary?" Stumbo said.

Work on the budget conference committee is expected to resume about mid-morning Monday.?
