A Republican leader in the Kentucky Senate still believes the General Assembly is on target to hold a late October or early November special session on pension reform.
A party colleague in the House says it will likely be a harder vote for freshmen lawmakers.
Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer and Erlanger Representative Adam Koenig attended the Kentucky Equine Education Project Conference in Lexington Monday.
Thayer says the soon-to-be-released public pension bill is all about saving money, hundreds of millions of dollars according to the Scott County lawmaker. “So, we need to get the pension reform done and start achieving some savings before we go into the regular session and start working on the budget,” said Thayer.
Northern Kentucky State Representative Adam Koenig feels confident state pension reform legislation will be passed before Thanksgiving.
With all 100 members in the Kentucky House up for re-election, Koenig says it may be a particularly tough vote for freshmen lawmakers. “I think that’s a fair statement, but everyone, you know there’s freshmen in the senate, there’s folks who have been around for a while who are reticent to vote for it,” noted Koenig.
Asked about waiting on the federal government to take on tax reform, Thayer said that’s always a possibility, but he added Governor Bevin is very intent on trying to change Kentucky’s tax code.
