Ky Senator Making Revisions to Armed School Marshals Measure

LRC Public Information

A central Kentucky lawmaker says he’s working to modify legislation which would allow so-called ‘armed marshals’ at schools.  Paris Senator Steve West considered the initial filing proposal a ‘starting point’.

West says re-working the measure could address concerns about proper training. “Right now I’m working on the training component, so I want to see that tightened down.  Make sure whoever is in these schools has the proper training.  We’re looking at studies.  We’re looking at all types of options,” said West.

West also says existing laws deserve more attention.  “We have laws on the books as it pertains to school safety and it requires door locking and those sorts of things.  And, they are not really being enforced,” claimed West.

Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer called himself a strong supporter of what’s termed “permitless carry” legislation.  But, he says the Commonwealth is already a very pro second amendment state.  Thayer’s not sure if the bill will be addressed this session.
