Kentucky's only maximum security prison remains on lockdown after the assault of seven correctional staff at the prison on Thursday.

The Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville is home to 838 inmates. Department of Corrections Spokeswoman Lisa Lamb says an eighth staff member was injured while trying to assist near a canteen line in the yard of the Kentucky State Penitentiary.

Lamb says initial reports indicate there wasn’t a cause for the assaults, but the incident remains under investigation.

"Preliminary information indicates there was not a specific cause for the assaults and they were instead spontaneous." Lamb said.

Injured staff all are expected to have a full recovery and return to work soon. Visitations have been suspended at the prison until officers complete their investigation.
