Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for a man allegedly attempting to live in wooded areas in Marshall County by trespassing and stealing supplies from locals.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife is leading a multi-agency investigation that includes the Kentucky State Police, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and Calvert City Police Department. KDFW is investigating due to the specialized nature of their work, which includes the ability to track individuals through wooded areas.
The suspect has been spotted in the Calvert City area, ranging from the primary truck stop near I-24 to the Sledd Creek Boat Ramp in Gilbertsville. KDFW Sergeant Daniel Richardson said the man, thought to be in his 30s and of Asian descent, is committing acts of theft to maintain his nomadic lifestyle.
“He’s been breaking into some people’s campers and storage buildings, outbuildings, stuff like that. Only thing he’s taken is stuff that he uses to live in the woods,” Richardson said.
Richardson said the suspect appears to be armed after stealing weapons along his journey. However, he is not believed to be violent at this time. He said the man flees when approached by law enforcement or members of the public. Richardson said the man may not be the only suspect, with others spotted by witnesses.
“They’re just living off the land. They’re eating the corn out of people’s gardens,” Richardson said.
Richardson said the man and other potential suspects are eating box turtles, muscle shells and other natural materials found along their route. He said campsites where the man has stayed have been discovered by property owners.
Those with information that may lead to the arrest of those involved are encouraged to contact Kentucky State Police Post 1 Dispatch at 270-856-3721. Richardson said Calvert City residents should lock their doors and call 911 if the suspect attempts to enter private property.
