In less than three weeks, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray will return to private life, after more than a decade serving in urban-county government. The 65-year-old Glasgow native is completing his second term as mayor.
Gray says finding remedies for police and fire pensions plus employee health insurance cleared the way for capital expenditures. “What this did is put the city back on solid financial grounds and that allowed us then to make investments. And that’s just like a good business. A good business is going to watch its cost basis. It’s going to watch its costs and it’s also going to make investments in the future. That’s what we’ve done,” said Gray.
Gray says those investments include renovating Rupp Arena and the historic courthouse plus expanding the convention center and bringing fiber optic internet services to the town. The two-term mayor was asked if he could see himself entering the political fray again sometime. “In life, you never rule things out, but, and why is that because we’re able to adjust and adapt and that’s what life is all about. Taking the next act. Taking the next chapter. And, in a sense discovering and being adventurous in order to do that,” explained Gray.
