Sheriff Kevin Byars said 78 people applied for the positions. The new officers are Deputies JT Coleman, Carey Hendley, Jason Young and Stephen Robinson. Current resource officer Sgt. Ray Chumbler will supervise.

Byars said the new officers allow greater coverage for the local schools.

"The high school's resource officer would have to leave and go to the middle school if they had some incidents that needed to be investigated," Byars said.

Byars said the officers will offer full-time coverage at the high school and middle schools and will also rotate between the other county schools. He said the officers bring experience from a variety of law enforcement backgrounds.
