The Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center has received a $20,000 grant from the Mary Kay Foundation to help furnish the Paducah nonprofit’s soon-to-be new home. Merryman House plans to buy the old McCracken County Board of Education campus next year if the group can raise enough funds.
Executive Director Mary Foley says overcrowding has become a concern.
“We are a tad bit landlocked where we are and certainly have used every nook and cranny," Foley said. "And so our board of directors has been working for several years on trying to set the course for what would be the best move for the Merryman House and those that we serve in the Purchase region.”
The current shelter holds 24 beds, and the new facility would hold a minimum of 36 along with extra space for expansion.
Foley says Merryman House has received grants from Mary Kay before and previously applied the last two years.
"When you're grant-funded, a lot of that stuff can be very restrictive and dwindle down your choices but this grant was actually written with the new facility in mind," Foley said."
Earlier this year, Merryman House received a $42,200 donation from Leadership Paducah to help fund the move.
