More than 100 retired coal miners and spouses from across the region will file into buses Tuesday for a mine workers rally in Lexington.

The United Mine Workers of America is rallying in support of legislation concerning the health benefits and pensions for retired miners, spouses, widows and dependents. Miners hope to garner support for federal legislation protecting health care benefits for retirees whose companies have gone bankrupt.

More than 50 buses will be bringing people to the rally from seven states, including Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia.

The union’s vice president says miners are calling on Congress to live up to the promise they made in 1946, and provide miners healthcare from cradle to grave.

The union expects a turnout of about 6,000 people.
