The Murray Calloway County Republican Party is holding a 'Prayer Luncheon' on inauguration day. The Friday morning event includes historical perspective from Murray State University political science professor Dr. Winfield Rose, a devotional and patriotic and a live viewing of the Donald Trump's presidential swearing-in ceremony.
Calloway County GOP Chair Greg DeLancey said groups throughout history have prayed for their leaders and he wanted commemorate the tradition and Trump's inauguration in a positive way.
"I think a lot of us have a faith that we believe, not necessarily a particular religion or a particular church, but just something to say 'hey we want to begin with giving blessings and ask for blessings for our country going forward.'"
DeLancey said he has no plans to counter the Trump protest march in Murray the following day.
"This is a great country and the ability to speak our minds is one of the great things about our constitution. So we won't be there or won't be trying to counter it in any way."
Delancey said he hopes those who protest do so in a way that shares 'true feelings' and not anger.
DeLancey said he's excited to see a Republican administration and majority in Congress, also in Kentucky's Governor and legislature and urges party leaders to deliver on promises made, including changes to Obamacare and health insurance. He said Trump has already begun delivering on promises like keeping jobs in the country and standing up to foreign leaders. The Prayer Luncheon is January 20 at 10 a.m. at The Crossroads Restaurant in Murray.
