A Murray High School art teacher is bringing new tools to her classroom this year after attending a national summit on digital storytelling.

Emily Chipman was one of 52 teachers from across the country who attended the National Gallery of Art's Teacher Institute in Washington D.C. in July. She said that art is an important outlet for students.

"Art is a good way to process emotions and feelings and gives you a safe place to be where you know that you can be yourself and you can try out new ideas and you’re not going to be criticized for those," she said.

Chipman said that one of the goals of the summit was to offer strategies to help instill empathy in students, letting them understand that people can connect through similar experiences.

Shelby Frye is a senior at Murray State University, double majoring in theatre and journalism. She has lived in Murray for four years, but grew up in Paris, Tennessee. When she isn’t working at WKMS, Shelby performs in and works on crew for Murray State Theatre productions, plays Dungeons & Dragons, and keeps her plate full with her dual majors.
