Murray to Move City Hall and Police Department

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

The Murray City Council has authorized a big move for the city hall and police department. In a special meeting Monday night, the council ruled in favor to move city hall into the former BB&T building downtown and move the police department into the current city hall. The resolution says both agencies needed more space. City council member Linda Cherry said the plan has been “in the talks” for a while.

“For years there’s been a little talk about it. I think the time is right this time, when the mayor approached the BB&T people and it just seems like now is the time to act, everything is in our favor.” Cherry said.

Mayor Jack Rose said the BB&T building’s 900-thousand dollar price tag will come from general funds and gas revenue from the utility fund. The contract was signed Tuesday. The move-in date and plans for the existing police department have not been determined. Rose said the exact cost of the move has not been determined, but that he has recently met with an architect and that they believe little work will have to be done to the BB&T building. And they anticipate more work will be put into the current city hall location for the police department. City council member Wesley Bolin said in a Facebook post that the move will double the current size of City Hall, and provide a badly needed expanded and updated facility for our police department. He also said that the move has no connection at all to the once proposed pay-rolll tax.
