A Murray State University student died in a car accident over the weekend.

Interim President Bob Jackson said in a campus email on Monday that Joseph Pennington was a freshman from Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was killed Friday afternoon in Grayson County while heading home for the holiday weekend.

Pennington was a biology/pre-med major and wanted to become a surgeon, according to the university.

Multiple news outlets report a release from the Grayson County Police said 18-year-old Pennington died Saturday in a hospital from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash. Pennington collided with a pickup truck and was ejected from the vehicle. The other driver, 64-year-old Milton Cummings of Louisville received serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

A 'Celebration of Life' for Pennington is September 7 in Elizabethtown.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
