New Soup Kitchen in Murray Meets Community Needs

Murray’s new soup kitchen, Soup for the Soul, celebrated its grand opening last night. The crew of volunteers served 29 plates of sandwiches, salad and fresh fruit.

The kitchen is attached to Murray Life Church and is equipped to serve 54 people, with overflow room located within the church building.

Currently, some of the major kitchen appliances have yet to be installed and picnic dinners will be served in the meantime. Once the kitchen is fully functional, menu items will include hot meats, vegetables, bread and dessert.

Operations run solely on donations, as federal funding imposes strict regulations on religious practices like praying and taking prayer requests.

Co-founder, Debbie Smith, says she noticed the need for the soup kitchen while serving a community meal with her church.

“After the meal I had several people telling me that was their only hot meal they got for the week,” Smith said. “And I just thought it was sad in our town when people have so much that some people don’t.”

Community members are invited to volunteer, by calling Tina Wright at 270-293-8462.
