New Special Prosecutor Tapped for Van Newberry Trial

Lance Dennee

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway has appointed 5th Circuit commonwealth’s attorney Zac Greenwell as the new special prosecutor in former McCracken County Judge-Executive Van Newberry’s trial for alleged zoning misconduct.

Newberry and his deputy judge-executive Doug Harnice are accused of illegally altering zoning maps. The trial was originally set to begin Tuesday, but was pushed after former prosecutor G.L. Ovey announced in October his retirement as 56th Circuit commonwealth’s attorney.

Greenwell is based in Marion, Kentucky and his circuit is made up of Crittenden, Union and Webster counties.

Judge Dennis Foust, who was set to hear the case, could not be reached for comment Tuesday about when the trial would get underway.
