Owensboro Health and University of Louisville Will Partner to Train More Family Medicine Physicians

Owensboro Health via Facebook

Owensboro is getting its first family medicine residency program.

The effort is a partnership between the University of Louisville School of Medicine and Owensboro Health and is scheduled to open in 2020.

The three-year program is expected to start with a class of six resident physicians and admit an additional six physicians each year.

Steve Johnson, Vice-President of Government, Community, and Legislative Affairs at Owensboro Health, said increasing the number of doctors who practice family medicine will have a big impact on the Owensboro region.

“Eight of the eleven counties that we serve primarily are health care professional shortage areas for primary medical care, meaning that there’s just not enough of them. And the challenge with that is we’re not training enough of them in the state.”

“This is not just an effort to solve a problem in this part of western Kentucky, Johnson said.  “It is a national issue, and it’s certainly a state issue that we have got to train more primary care physicians.

The family residency program will be located at Owensboro Health’s Parrish Medical Building.

The University of Louisville also has a family medicine residency program in Glasgow.
