Paducah Democrat Runs For District 2 State Senate Seat

A Paducah attorney has filed to run for the Kentucky Second District state Senate seat.

Julie Tennyson - a Democrat - said she was motivated to run after hearing Governor Matt Bevin’s  proposal to cut public education programs.

Bevin outlined cuts across state government, including public education, in a recent budget address. Tennyson said those cuts and the pension crisis are concerning to members of her community.

“It felt like if I didn’t do it who was going to do it? Who is going to stand up for teachers, who is going to stand up for public education? Because certainly those have not been issues where my opponent has stood up.” Tennyson said.

Tennyson potentially faces Republican state Senator Danny Carroll, who is running for reelection.

Carroll has said he is supportive of the framework of a proposal last fall to reform the pension system.

Tennyson said she also wants to bring economic development to the region. She said she has experience helping small businesses get off the ground as an attorney who specializes in copyright and trademark.

Tennyson is a graduate of the Emerge Kentucky program.
