Paducah National Weather Service Warns ‘Severe And Unusual’ Weather

National Weather Service

UPDATE 4:09 p.m.: National Weather Service Forecasters have reduced their confidence in the timing of the storm. The region remains in at an "enhanced" to "moderate" risk of severe weather. The NWS Reports, "There is some indication that activity could develop over southeast MO and southern IL near the Ohio River, but overall confidence in timing is low."

The National Weather Service in Paducah is predicting  severe and unusual weather between 1:00 and 5:00 this afternoon throughout the WKMS listening area.

NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin said the highest threats involve large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes, especially with supercells developing mid afternoon.

“This is an extremely rare situation that we have a moderate risk; there have only been three times that I could find in the month of July that we have a level four, moderate risk somewhere in our region,” Shanklin said.

NWS forecasters said the exact timing of the severe weather has been difficult to pinpoint, but activity is expected to begin around the Ohio River near southern Illinois around 1:00 with severe weather increasing into the afternoon and evening.

NWS advises that individuals check for updates throughout the day as the forecast could change.
