Local Democratic and Republican party heads are zeroing in on their candidates for the special election to replace Kentucky state Rep. John Tilley, now set for March 8.

Republican Gov. Matt Bevin appointed Tilley, a Democrat last month as secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet.

Christian County Republican Party chair Jason Hasert says his committee and Trigg County’s executive committee will hold an open meeting this Saturday to finalize who their candidate will be. Hasert said there’s five prospective candidates. That meeting takes place at the Christian County Republican Party headquarters at 10 a.m.

Christian County Democratic Executive Committee chair Jeff Taylor said his shortlist is narrowed to three interested parties. He said because the 8th District is “very oddly shaped”, some well-qualified candidates couldn’t run.

The deadline for candidates to be put forth is Tuesday, January 19.
