A trail camera photo submitted to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency appears to show a mountain lion in Obion County, Tennessee.
The photo, released on the TWRA's Facebook page, was taken on September 20. (It is incorrectly time-stamped, according to the TWRA.) Photographic experts are currently analyzing the picture.
The TWRA is trying to confirm the sighting. A TWRA official was unable to recover any tracks or physical evidence from the scene, on private property in Obion County.
Mountain lions or cougars are a protected species and cannot be hunted or killed in Tennessee. According to a release issued by the TWRA, biologists say a confirmation doesn't mean there is an established mountain lion population in Tennessee. They say it could potentially be a transient young male or an illegally released captive animal.
