Public Forum for Patients & Caregivers at Calloway Co. Library, Thursday

book cover, Amazon.com

Constance Alexander facilitates a Murray Calloway Endowment for Health Care public forum for patients and caregivers Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Calloway County Public Library. The featured speaker is attorney Chip Adams and Murray Calloway Hospital Chaplain Kerry Lambert preview a helpful book addressing the decision to use nursing home care and speaks with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good about the emotional dilemmas involved.

"As a chaplain, we encounter a number of aging patients whose children or even spouse are making difficult decisions in terms of their ongoing care, particularly when they find it difficult that they cannot care for their loved at home, at least in very easy terms. So when these individuals come into the hospital they are at times asked by the doctor to consider making a nursing home decision, not only for the patient, but also for the benefit of the caregiver."

People often wrestle with the promises they've made to their loved one, saying "I will never put you in a nursing home" or they wrestle with the guilt of having to say to their loved one that they simply can't care for them anymore. Lambert says, "If you really love them tell me how is the best way you think they can be best taken care of." That's when they start talking about which setting is best for the individual in the long term.

The book covered in this discussion is When Love Gets Tough, the Nursing Home Decision by Doug Manning, edited by Glenda Stansbury and illustrated by Kathy Burns. The book covers this difficult decision through experience and how to manage this with your family.

On Thursday, June 11, Murray Calloway Endowment for Health Care sponsors a forum about legal issues for patients and caregivers with attorney Chip Adams. Chaplain Kerry Lambert offers a brief introduction to a book about the emotions of nursing home decision making that will be the subject of a discussion program on June 23. This Thursday's forum is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Calloway County Public Library on Main Street with Constance Alexander facilitating, and finding support from the Kentucky Arts Council.
