The first day of the 2018 special legislative session found educators and others using the melody of a traditional Christmas song to send a message regarding the quick call to Frankfort.
Public school educators, past and present, came in droves to the state capitol earlier this year to protest proposed pension reforms.
Kentucky Education Association President Stephanie Winkler said she was sorry about people’s lives being disrupted for what she called ‘a political tantrum’ by the governor.
“Over something that could be solved in a lot more meaningful way, thoughtful way with stakeholder input and by following the laws instead of trying to legislate from the executive branch of government,” said Winkler.
Veteran Jessamine County Senator Tom Buford anticipates more court hearings over pension law, no matter what. “We’ll be sitting in front of the Supreme Court May, June, July, August. Somewhere in there. We go that far without anything happening. Regardless of what we pass or if we pass anything,” noted Buford.
Senate President Robert Stivers has said special session action could be wrapped up by Friday.
