A group of Republican lawmakers in the state House are pushing a bill that would allow some residents to carry concealed weapons on public school property.

Under the bill, residents with a valid concealed deadly weapons license or a temporary permit to carry concealed weapons would be allowed to carry them on public school property. They would also be allowed to carry a concealed weapon on public university campuses, in state and locally controlled government buildings and in meetings of the state’s General Assembly.

Four Republicans have signed on as sponsors of the bill, including Tim Moore of Elizabethtown. “My goal in crafting this bill is to make an anti terrorism measure, we as a society are constantly being threatened by folks who intend harm to us," he says.

The bill has yet to be discussed in the House Judiciary Committee. Democrat Brent Yonts is the vice chair of that committee. He expects the bill to draw controversy and opposition from teachers and parents.
