Seeking 'Fresh Start' Bevin Removes Pension System Chairman

Seeking "a fresh start" Governor Matt Bevin is removing the chairman of the Kentucky Retirement Systems board of trustees. Bevin issued the executive order saying the board was opposed to transparency under the existing leadership.

Thomas K. Elliott was re-appointed to the board by former Democratic Governor Steve Beshear last year. His term does not expire until 2019.

Kentucky Retirement Systems Executive Director William Thielen said Bevin does not have the authority to remove Elliott.

The Kentucky Retirement Systems is among the worst funded systems in the country with an unfunded liability of more than $19 billion dollars.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
