Sleepy Governor's Race Will Likely Mean Lower Turnout

In about two months, Kentucky voters will select the next governor.

The race between Republican nominee Matt Bevin and Democrat Jack Conway is currently a statistical tie, but veteran political commentator Al Cross says it hasn’t generated much enthusiasm within either party.

Cross doubts it will heat up in time to draw a lot of voters.

“I think voter turnout is likely to be at a historic low for a governor’s race because there really is just not that much excitement for either candidate and not much prospect that there will be excitement,” said Cross.

Cross also says this has been an unusual political season because the presidential race has been getting so much attention and has overshadowed the Kentucky gubernatorial campaigns.

But Cross says that hasn’t been enough to make this race more interesting.

"Neither Conway nor Bevin has excited their parties and a lot of the political oxygen is being sucked up by Donald Trump," said Cross. "There is more talk about the presidential race than the governor’s race by far."

Voter turnout this past May for the gubernatorial primaries was a mere 12.5 percent statewide.
