Calloway County’s Southwest Elementary is one of only 10 schools in Kentucky to be named a Blue Ribbon School this week by the U.S. Department of Education.
Southwest is the only school in western Kentucky to achieve the distinction this year, with the majority of winners in the Louisville and Cincinnati metropolitan areas.
The Blue Ribbons are awarded on overall academic excellence, as well as progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. In 34 years of operating the program, the Department of Education has awarded the Blue Ribbon to fewer than 8,500 schools nationwide.
Southwest Elementary has around 460 students. This is the first Blue Ribbon award for Calloway County Schools.
