State Snow Removal Plan Includes More Trucks and Technology

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is adding automated vehicle location equipment to many of its snow trucks this winter. Transportation officials detailed snow plan information yesterday in Louisville. State Highway Engineer Patty Dunaway says AVL technology tracks salt distribution, fuel, and plow positions on trucks.

“For example, if the trucks are driving faster than our recommended 35 miles per hour whenever they’re putting salt out, then the salt bounces off the road," Dunaway said. "It doesn’t cover as it should. So, it helps us to monitor that to make sure we’re trying to be as consistent as we possibly can.”

Dunaway says the vehicle location technology allows onboard and central command center monitoring. Also new this winter is a web site which citizens can check to determine their best route of travel. Dunaway says it’s snowky.ky.gov.
