Stumbo Says Hemp Bill Could Live On

A measure to regulate hemp farming in Kentucky might not be dead yet. House Speaker Greg Stumbo said repair work’s underway on the bill, which has stalled in the House. Still, the Lexington Herald Leader reports Stumbo did not commit to a House vote on the measure. It leaves Agriculture Commissioner James Comer hopeful.

“It’s been very uplifting to see the public being so engaged in this issue and supportive of this issue.  I’m still holding out a little hope that the members of the Democrat caucus will put enough pressure on Greg Stumbo to allow this bill to get a fair vote on the full House floor.”

On Monday, the House Speaker said the hemp proposal would get no vote in the House this winter.  Police and many Democratic lawmakers worry legalizing industrial hemp will hurt the state’s fight against illicit drug use.
