‘Super’ Special Guests Coming To 41st Annual Superman Celebration In Metropolis

The original Supergirl, Smallville’s Lois Lane and Arrow’s Nyssa al Ghul are coming to southern Illinois this week for an annual Superman Celebration.

Helen Slater, Erica Durance and Katrina Law, respectively, are special guests at the Metropolis festival now in its 41st year.

Activities include Q&A sessions, a LEGO sculpture workshop, comedy show and a kids’ costume contest.

Amanda King is the Executive Director of the Metropolis Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’re not a con, we’re an outdoor celebration, but we have a lot of similarities in that we have autograph sessions, and artists and writers who come and do all of these things that you get at these other events, but you’re not paying seven-eight hundred dollars to do it," King said.

Preparations for the four day event is a year round task for organizers, she said, and they try to raise the bar a little higher to keep an edge as the community festival competes with comic-con events in the industry.

Metropolis is expecting between 20 to 40 thousand visitors, weather depending. King said past sales tax records show the economic impact to be upwards of one million dollars.

The SyFy show Krypton is a sponsor this year. The Superman Celebration runs Thursday through Sunday.
