Union City Teacher Charged With Statutory Rape Of Former Student

Obion County Sheriff's Office

The Obion County Sheriff’s Office arrested on Wednesday a Union City High School Spanish teacher on three counts of statutory rape by an authority figure.

The sheriff’s office said these charges against 48-year-old Mary Beth McManus of Union City stem from encounters she had with a former student in 2012, who was 16 years old at the time.

Union City Schools Director Wes Kennedy said in a statement McManus is on unpaid administrative leave as the investigation continues. Kennedy said McManus was not an employee of the school district in 2012.

She appears in court on July 25.
