Monday Afternoon Update:

Update:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says one eastbound lane on Interstate 24 near Pennyrile Parkway has opened, but both westbound lanes remained blocked.

The estimated duration for the westbound lanes is still three to four hours.

A detour remains in place for westbound traffic via the Pennyrile Parkway Northbound to the US 68 Hopkinsville Bypass, then east to US 68 East to return to I-24 at the Exit 65 Cadiz Interchange.

Earlier:

Interstate 24 near the Pennyrile Parkway exit in Christian County shut down late Monday morning due to a fatal crash involving multiple vehicles.

Christian County Emergency management Director Randy Graham says one person is dead and at least seven or eight others are injured. One person is being flown to Nashville due to their injuries.

The Kentucky State Police have confirmed one fatality. KSP said the collision occurred in the westbound lane around mile marker 79 at 9:50 a.m.

Graham described the scene as large, involving two tractor-trailer trucks and at least seven other vehicles. Both lanes are closed.

The eastbound lane is closed due to the fire and smoke and will open up again when cleared, Graham said.

He recommended drivers find another route.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the eastbound lane should open within the hour. The estimated duration for westbound lane is four hours.

KYTC says a detour is being set up at the 83 mile parker taking traffic to the Pennyrile Parkway to U.S. 68 to return to I-24 at Cadiz exit 65.
