Update 3:10 p.m.: According to Calloway EM Director Bill Call, the explosives have been removed.

Authorities are currently working on trying to remove the truck. The roadway is still closed and they expect it to be open by 4-5 p.m. Rural Electric is beginning to route power back to the area.

Original Story 6/5: A truck carrying 34,212 lbs of a cast booster/charge explosive product crashed in a rural west Kentucky community on Wednesday morning.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said the truck carrying the explosives crashed into power lines in Midway blocking both lanes of US 641 south of Murray in Calloway County. Calloway Emergency Management says the explosive manufacturer is Accurate Energetic Systems in McEwen, Tennessee.

Calloway EM Director Bill Call said the cargo did not explode and needs a blasting cap to detonate. He said the driver wasn’t injured.

“It’s pretty remarkable when you see the condition of the truck, the way it landed, but he walked away from it and says he’s not hurt,” Call said.

Call said removing and transporting the explosives could take up to five hours. A local utility has cut power to the affected area. Power is being rerouted to parts of Hazel.

TAC Officer Nathan Baird said drivers are being rerouted down Midway Road to Crossland Road to State Line Road.
