A bible reading marathon on the Calloway County Courthouse lawn is coming to a close today after four days and three nights.
Coordinator James Kruger said the event is not political but a spiritual community effort. He said this is the fourth year for the Kentucky 120 United Bible Reading Marathon in Calloway County. Each year it takes place in front of the courthouse. Kruger thinks there has always been misunderstanding regarding the separation of church and state.
“The constitution really is talking about not declaring that any one religion has to be the religion of the state or all the people. But it’s not saying that you cannot or should not be involved with your religion or stand up for your faith in the public square,” Kruger said.
The marathon takes place in public spaces in every Kentucky county. Kruger’s wife Jackie is also a coordinator. She said Governor Matt Bevin has also participated in a bible reading at the Capitol building.
