Tuesday was another big night for Democratic women and political newcomers in the party, with a historic nomination in Georgia, an intra-party squabble settled in Texas and an upset victory in a Kentucky House race.

The day's contests featured Democratic ideological and stylistic battles, but in the end the national party largely got the candidates they wanted — especially in critical Texas — that they believe will be the most competitive general election nominees.

Kentucky voters will head to the polls on Tuesday to decide who will compete for seats in the state legislature this fall.

Princeton musician Alonzo Pennington and Murray State University professor Paul Walker are vying to be the Democratic candidate for Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District. Kentucky’s Primary Election is on May 22. The winner of this primary faces incumbent Republican James Comer in November.

  Perhaps the most hotly contested race for the U.S. House this year in Kentucky is in the 6th  congressional district, which includes Lexington and the surrounding area. And for the six Democrats competing in Tuesday’s primary for the party’s nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Andy Barr, health care has become a central issue to their campaigns.
