The U.S. Army’s second longest runway - the Campbell Army Airfield at Fort Campbell - is temporarily ceasing operations for repairs and improvements.
According to Fort Campbell, the $28-million project includes resurfacing the runway, repairing ramps and taxiways and adding and moving lighting. Work also includes decreasing the width and length of the runway to comply with industry standards. Excess portions will become ‘overrun’ in the event of a faulty landing.
The heliport will continue operations so there will be no interference with 101st Combat Aviation Brigade operations.
‘Welcome home’ ceremonies also won’t be affected as aircraft will either divert to Fort Campbell’s Sabre Army Airfield or the Nashville International Airport.
Work will be complete in late July or early August.
