Tennessee Lawmaker Drops Bill Regulating Food Stamp Purchases

A Tennessee State Representative has withdrawn her bill seeking to restrict items that can be purchased with food stamps.

Representative Sheila Butt said Tuesday she was dropping the bill because it is unlikely the federal government would approve a state waiver to make proposed changes to the program. The bill would ban items high in calories, sugar and fat from being purchased with food stamps and stop grocers from selling banned items to people on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Butt said she is hopeful President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration will give states more flexibility to run their own programs.
