The United Postal Service will reduce hours at more than 25 rural post offices in western Kentucky next year. Nationally, the USPS proposes reducing hours at 13,000 post offices to help save money. United States Postal Service Spokesperson David Walton says the two-year plan to reduce hours is an alternative to closing small branches. He says,
“We look at it as a win-win situation. You know, we can keep the post offices open and make the community happy but at the same time we’ll be able to reduce the hours at these locations, which will in turn save the Postal Service money as well.”
Walton says customers who rely on these outposts will not have to worry about changes until after the holidays with the first round of cuts coming Jan. 12. Communities with proposed cuts to operating hours first have a community meeting to determine whether or not they want to close their post office, reduce its hours or open a post office within a local business.
