Nobuhiko Obayashi’s HOUSE is a bit difficult to describe. It's got flavor notes all over the map: Japanese schoolgirls take a trip to a 70s cinepsychedelia Scooby Doo haunted house where absurd and sometimes silly nightmares befall them. A girl travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects. If you want to have a silly, spooky good time right before Halloween, this is the movie for you.
