State officials are reminding Kentuckians that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will provide grants to partially pay for projects that help clean up polluted streams, lakes and groundwater supplies.
The deadline for submitting proposals is February 3.
The Kentucky Division of Water is the agency that awards the matching grants that pay for 60% of the overall costs of projects chosen.
The grants can be used for watershed restoration projects, watershed development plans and for projects that reduce or prevent runoff pollution — the top contributor to water pollution in Kentucky.
Runoff can carry sediment, nutrients, pesticides, heavy metals and animal and human waste into water. It accounts for nearly two-thirds of the pollution that impairs streams and lakes in Kentucky.
