Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham announced Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013 he will be seeking re-election during a conference at the McCracken County Courthouse.
Cunningham said there is still a need to improve the justice system, and stressed the need for a more efficient and accessible system.
"The court system that we have still remains unaccessible to too many people in this state because of lack of financial means. It remains unaccessible to many of the elderly and those people who are disabled. It's too expensive and money still plays too much a part. It determines in many instances, who goes to jail and who stays in jail," Cunningham said.
In 2010, the KY Supreme Court followed nearly two dozen other states in forming the Kentucky Access to Justice Commission. The commission's goal is to provide legal services to the poor, create a statewide plan to deliver civil legal services, and develop strategies to increase funding for those legal services. Cunningham is the Supreme Court of Kentucky liaison on the commission.
Cunningham was elected in 2006 to serve the 1st Supreme Court District. For the previous 15 years he served Caldwell, Livingston, Lyon and Trigg Counties in the 56th Circuit Court.
