(Update) Tenn. Transgender Bathroom Bill Delayed Amid Financial Questions

Nattayanee Darath, 123rf

Update April 12:

A sponsor of a Tennessee transgender bathroom bill has told a finance committee that he has to consider a state attorney general's opinion before going forward.

A member of the Senate Finance Ways and Means Committee said Tuesday that the bill may have to be heard after the budget is passed because of the potential financial impact to the state.

Original Story April 11:

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery says a transgender bathroom bill moving through the state legislature could cost the state federal education funding.

Democratic lawmakers opposed to the bill said Monday that Slatery's opinion should be the final "nail in the coffin" to a controversial piece of legislation that is getting a backlash from the business community.

The bill would require students in public grade schools and universities to use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their sex at birth. A number of businesses have come out against the measure.

In several states, major companies have joined lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists in opposition to similar measures.
