To commemorate the life of a Kentucky State Trooper who was killed in the line of duty last year, the Kentucky State Police and Transportation Cabinet are renaming a portion of Interstate 24 in Lyon County.
A ceremony later this month will name a portion of I-24 from the Caldwell County line to the intersection with Ky Route 293 as the "Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder Memorial Highway."
The designation was made possible through a joint legislative resolution proposed by Sen. Stan Humphries and approved by the state legislature during the recent legislative session.
In September 2015, Ponder was shot and killed by while responding to a routine traffic stop on I-24.
Earlier this week, KSP dedicated a memorial at its Mayfield Post 1 headquarters to Ponder and Tpr. Eric Chrisman, who was killed in a car collision last year on US 62 near the Kentucky Dam on the Marshall and Livingston County line.
Sen. Humphries and representatives from the KSP and KYTC will speak at the ceremony Wednesday, June 22 at 2PM CST at the Lyon Convention Center located at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville, Ky.
