Hopkinsville, KY – The Hopkinsville Police Department plans to seek more than a million dollars in grant funding to help expand the force. The Kentucky New Era reports the city council approved the department's plans to apply for three grants. The largest, provided by the U.S. Department of justice could provide up to 970 thousand dollars to hire, pay, and train six additional police officers for three years. If selected, the department would be required to retain the positions for an additional year, costing the city an estimated 334 thousand. City Councilman Charlie Henderson said he hoped the economy would improve so the city could afford to keep the positions for longer than four years.
