Environmental agency stifling growth, says Mayor

By Rebecca Feldhaus

Oak Grove, KY – Oak Grove Mayor Dan Potter is not pleased with a proposed agreement between the city and the Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority (H-W-E-A). Potter expressed his frustration at a special called council meeting last (Tuesday) night regarding a necessary sewer system upgrade to serve a proposed Oak Grove mall. The city would be required to pay 1 million dollars toward rebuilding a pump station and extending service lines. H-W-E-A will also likely raise sewer rates to help finance the project. The Kentucky New Era quoted Potter saying the H-W-E-A is doing everything it can to keep his town from growing. Area lawmakers are stepping in hoping to find funds to keep the project on track. An H-W-E-A attorney expects more discussion among the city, developers and his company to clear up financial responsibilities. After groundbreaking the mall is expected to be in operation within 5 years.
