Frankfort, KY – By modernizing its coal burning plants, Director of the University of Kentucky's Center for Applied Energy Research Rodney Andrews says the state can cut carbon dioxide level by ten to twenty percent. Andrews testified Thursday in Frankfort.
"We could also look at doing that retrofit because that improvement in efficiency will make up for losses that we'll have if we do carbon capture which has quite a significant parasitic load on a plant."
Carbon capture, or sequestration, is when emissions are trapped in underground storage areas. Andrews adds it's unclear how the power generation will change in the years ahead.
