Kentucky Receives Sex Education Grants

By David Schmoll

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky has been awarded 1.7 million dollars through two teen pregnancy prevention grants. The US Department of Health and Human services provided the grants to promote programs that have been shown to successfully deter teen pregnancy. Director for the division of Women's Health with the Kentucky Dept. of Public Health Joy Hoskins explains the funding model.

"The funds for these grants will be put out through local health departments and for local health departments to enter into partnerships with their schools, faith based organizations and community based organizations."

Local officials and organizations don't have to accept the money, Hoskins said. One of the grants supports abstinence education, while the other promotes any type of teen pregnancy deterrence, including safe-sex.
