TVA Institutes Pay Freeze

By Angela Hatton

Knoxville, TN – TVA is freezing the base pay of about 35-hundred managers and specialists until 2013. TVA President Tom Kilgore says the federal utility is joining the two-year pay freeze that Congress adopted for two million other federal employees. The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports although TVA is a federal utility, it no longer receives direct government appropriations, so the move won't save the government money. Kilgore says it's being done in the spirit of the pay freeze. While the nonunion workers at TVA won't receive pay hikes, they will be eligible for performance-based bonuses. The freeze doesn't apply to 8,600 union employees of the utility, who negotiate labor contracts with TVA.
