Frankfort, KY – A legislative crackdown on illegal immigration was at the center of debate Tuesday both in the Kentucky House and on the steps of the state capitol. The House overwhelmingly approved a bill that requires government contractors to verify their employees are in this nation legally. Just hours earlier, opponents to immigration legislation rallied outside. Alexis Meza is with the Kentucky Dream Coalition.
"We have to stand up for ourselves, you have to support your kids, don't let their dreams be defeated, help them out and help each other out."
The crowd chanted No S-B Six,' a reference to legislation already approved in the Senate. S-B Six, or Senate Bill Six, declares the state off-limits to illegal immigrants and any undocumented worker arrested here could be charged with trespassing. State Senator John Schickel says his bill allows local officials to enforce federal immigration laws.
