Union City, TN – The US Department of Transportation is providing a $13 million grant for a Mississippi River port project in northwestern Tennessee. US Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, along with US Representative Stephen Fincher and Governor Bill Haslam all call the proposed Northwest Tennessee Regional Port at Cates Landing in Lake County an important economic project. Funding the development comes in light of the impending closure of Union City's Goodyear plant, as well as high unemployment rates. The Union City Messenger reports an additional $7 million in state funding has been allocated for the port project in Haslam's proposed state budget.
