Lexington, KY – Fewer students across the state are getting in trouble at school. The Kentucky Center for School Safety today released its annual report for the 2009-2010 academic year, finding a continued downward trend in disciplinary action for violations of school board policy.
"I see the disturbing class going down; I'm seeing the failure to attend detention going down, defiance of authority going down. So I think that's good news. And I'm seeing downward trends in all grades K-11 as far as disciplinary actions are concerned."
Jon Akers is executive director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety. He says many teachers and administrators are doing a better job of explaining to students what good behavior means rather than just handing out the code of conduct. There's bad news on violations of criminal law, however. This year's report finds an uptick in drug possession and use of marijuana and prescription drugs among public school students.
